Magic: Duels of the Planeswalkers 2013: Reverse the Assault Challenge Solution

Magic the Gathering: Duels of the Planeswalkers has become an annual release on XBox Live Arcade, Playstation Network and Steam for fans of Magic. 2013 is the newest iteration of the series, and was the first time the series was released for the iPad as well. One of the popular features of the games has been a series of challenges pitting the player in a pre-designed situation that he/she must figure out how to overcome and achieve victory from the jaws of defeat. In 2013 10 new challenges await to be uncovered...

The first challenge is Reverse the Assault.

This match will pit you up against Garruk and his green deck. You will begin this challenge on Garruk's turn with him about to attack you. You need to survive the attack and then launch your own attack on your turn to beat them.

Step 1: Garruk is going to attack immediately with all three of his creatures, obviously with more than enough power to kill you (9 damage vs 5 health). Block the Stampeding Rhino with your Goblin Piker (you will still take 3 damage because the Rhino has Trample, putting you at 2 health). Block the Sentinel Spider with your Reckless Brute. Allow the Deadly Recluse to go unblocked (taking 1 damage as a result, leaving you with 1 health).

Step 2: Immediately after you hit the "Block" button hit "Stop Timer". Cast the spell Fling, targeting Garruk. Sacrifice your Reckless Brute to Fling, which will cause 3 damage to Garruk (His life total is now at 8). (Note that Duels has you pick the target of your spell before you pick the creature you'll sacrifice, don't accidentally target your Brute). Because of how the rules for blocking work his Sentinel Spider is still considered blocked, even though he no longer faces the Reckless Brute, so you won't take any damage from the Spider. After casting Fling allow the combat to resolve and your turn will begin.

Step 3: You will draw a Mountain, which you should play immediately (giving you 7 in play). First cast Act of Treason to steal Garruk's Sentinel Spider. Click on your Dragon Hatchling and activate his special ability 4 times.

Step 4: Attack with Sentinel Spider and Dragon Hatchling to do 8 damage, defeating Garruk.
